AI? You Mean Apple Intelligence?
Apple has unveiled its new suite of AI features, branded as "Apple Intelligence," integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Apple announced a 3B parameter on-device foundation model and larger server-based language model that have been “built to perform specialized app-based tasks”(Large Action Models) and extend the capabilities of their generative feature set. During the announcement of their foundation models, they made sure to include performance benchmarking against current best-in-class alternatives and a glimpse into their (responsible!) model development process.

This major update also includes a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT capabilities directly into Siri and other Apple applications. This integration aims to enhance user experience by making advanced AI tools and the highest performing models more accessible and useful across Apple's ecosystem, while ensuring user privacy through on-device processing and data protections (OpenAI) (Yahoo). So what does all this mean? Did Apple just open up their walled garden at the OS level?
Exciting new features
Among the many exciting feature announcements, a few stood out from the crowd. Apple debuted "Genmoji", allowing users to create personalized emojis and memory movies from their photo libraries using natural language descriptions. The Photos app now includes advanced search capabilities to find specific moments in video clips and remove distracting objects with the Clean Up tool (Apple). iPadOS 18 gains systemwide Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text across various apps, along with Image Playground for creating playful images quickly (Apple). MacOS Sequoia adds updates like iPhone mirroring, a new Passwords app for secure credential storage, and immersive gaming features such as Personalized Spatial Audio and Game Mode (Engadget).
Apple / OpenAI Deal
Through a business and mission-focused lens, the partnership between Apple and OpenAI marks a significant step forward for both companies. ChatGPT will be integrated into Apple devices, allowing users to access AI-driven functionalities such as image and document understanding directly from their iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This collaboration aligns with both companies' commitment to innovation and user privacy, setting a new standard for AI integration in consumer technology (OpenAI).
The financial terms of the partnership between Apple and OpenAI are unique. Instead of a traditional monetary exchange, the deal focuses on mutual benefits through distribution. Apple has not paid OpenAI in cash but offers broad distribution channels for OpenAI's ChatGPT within Apple's ecosystem, enhancing the accessibility and integration of AI tools in Apple devices. This partnership is unusual for Apple for 3 notable reasons. 1) Apple has seemingly admitted defeat to another foundation model developer, OpenAI (they traditionally pride themselves on building all of their core tech end-to-end). 2) Apple is not directly profiting off their 2B+ device distribution channel like they do with Google Search (Google paid Apple ~$20B in 2022 to be the default search engine on Apple platforms). 3) Apple is opening up their products at the OS level to another company and service (OpenAI will surely have to integrate their models with Apple’s network of operating systems). Nevertheless, this strategic collaboration aims to leverage each company's strengths to advance AI capabilities and reach a wider user base (KPBS). That being said, the remaining question becomes will Microsoft end up as the largest beneficiary of this partnership given Azure is the hyperscaler of choice for OpenAI model development and hosting.
Rollout to End Users
The rollout of the integrated AI features will be gradual, starting with the release of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Users can expect to see enhanced functionalities within Siri and other Apple applications, driven by ChatGPT's advanced AI capabilities. This integration aims to provide a seamless user experience, ensuring that AI-driven features are both accessible and user-friendly. The updates will include new content creation tools, such as personalized emojis and memory movies, enhancing the overall user interaction with Apple devices (KPBS).
This partnership sets a new standard for AI integration in consumer technology, emphasizing innovation and user privacy through on-device processing and data protection measures (KPBS).
Elon Musk’s Clapback and Implications
Elon Musk has criticized the Apple-OpenAI partnership, raising concerns about data security and privacy. Musk's comments highlight the ongoing debate about the balance between AI advancements and user privacy. This pushback underscores the importance of transparent AI practices and robust privacy safeguards as these technologies become more integrated into daily life (Yahoo). One could argue that Elon’s comments are highly hypocritical given the tight and sometimes suspicious connections between xAI and other companies in Elon’s portfolio (Tesla, X, SpaceX).

The Future of AI Video – Major Players Making Waves In The Race
The world was stunned by the capabilities of OpenAI’s Sora (Gen AI video model) just recently in mid-February this year. Today, more than ever, we’re witnessing real-time advancements in AI video models that are transforming creative industries by providing powerful tools for video production. These models reduce the time and cost associated with traditional filmmaking techniques, allowing creators to generate complex scenes and effects quickly and, more importantly, near-Studio quality. That being said, the technology is still evolving, and issues like control over output quality and consistency remain barriers to widespread adoption. Let’s dive into some of the leading players in the GenAI video generation space.
Runway Gen-3
Runway's Gen-3 Alpha is making waves in the AI video generation scene. This powerhouse model creates hyper-realistic 10-second video clips with exceptional control over structure, style, and motion. Trained on a massive dataset of videos and images, Gen-3 Alpha excels in precise key-framing and imaginative transitions. Tools like Text-to-Video, Image-to-Video, and Motion Brush showcase its versatility, making it a go-to for creative professionals.
Luma Labs' Dream Machine
Next up, Luma Labs introduces the Dream Machine, a strong contender against both Sora and Gen-3. Focused on high-fidelity videos with realistic movements and interactions, Dream Machine is designed to support filmmakers and content creators with advanced video generation tools. It’s quickly becoming a favorite in the AI video market.
Kling AI Video Model
Developed by KWAI in China, Kling is another notable player in the AI video space. Although details about Kling's capabilities are less publicized, it's part of the rapidly expanding field of generative video models that promise to revolutionize video creation through advanced AI techniques.
Pika Labs' Big Move
Amidst this AI video model frenzy, Pika Labs has made headlines by securing an $80 million Series B funding round. Led by Spark Capital with participation from Greycroft, Lightspeed, and actor Jared Leto, this brings Pika's total funding to $135 million. Pika aims to democratize video creation, making it accessible for everyone to produce high-quality content on demand. This substantial investment positions Pika as a formidable competitor in a market dominated by giants like OpenAI and Google (Pika Labs, Maginative, AI Expert Network).
The Impact on Creative Industries
These advancements in AI video models are transforming the creative industries by providing powerful tools that reduce the time and cost associated with traditional filmmaking. Creators can now generate complex scenes and effects quickly, democratizing video production and making high-quality content more accessible.
The competition between models like Sora, Gen-3, Dream Machine, and Kling is driving rapid innovation. As these models improve, they will likely become integral tools across various fields, from entertainment and marketing to education. While challenges like output quality and consistency remain, the ongoing improvements promise to address these issues, making AI video models even more robust and versatile.
For more on this topic, check out the full details from Runway, No Film School, and Ben's Bites.
Conclusion
The competition between Sora, Gen-3, Dream Machine, and Kling drives innovation in AI video technology, leading to more robust and versatile models. As these tools become more sophisticated, they will likely play a crucial role in democratizing video production, empowering individual creators, and enhancing creative industries (Runway) (Luma Blog | Team | Substack) (MarkTechPost).
